    things to be thankful for

This week has qualified as SUCH a great and wonderful week.  Last Friday night started out a bit rocky, but with the help of some special people named Laura, Julissa, and Demetrios, I cheered up and realized how great my friends are.  Just having someone to call who I can sit there and be an idiot around, means a lot to me.

The next day my sister and Mom flew in from out of town, and although I was working on Guys on Ice, we proceeded to have a really wonderful Christmas week, with lots of eating, relaxing, watching Veronica Mars...  it was really great.  I didn't see much of my friends that week, and in fact was feeling rather anti-social... but it didn't matter, because my family was here.

Yesterday my sister left (Mom had left the day before), and I immeditaly felt depressed and awful about not getting to see my family more often than this.  But I went to work and tried to cheer up, and lo and behold, had a really wonderful day leading into what has so far been a really wonderful birthday today... all because of the great people here who really make me feel loved and cared for.  I'm sure the rest of the night will be a great one, surrounded by friends.

This Christmas/Birthday week, I'm SO thankful for my family... and for the friends here who have become a family to me over the past year and a half.

    Happy New Year!

    Dramatics magazine

So, Dramatics has done three articles on ME at this point... well, now they've done one on Props at Milwaukee Rep.  Jim Guy is seriously an amazing amazing Properties Director, and I was really pleased that he offered me resume help and reference letters.  So, anyway, check out the article!

    ACC review

I don't agree with some of this review.  Oh well, shrug.

    Saturday, December 9, 2006

    Robert Jordan

Gerry Neugent, one of the actors in A Christmas Carol, recently asked me what's new with our favorite author.  I was sadly unable to fill him in, but luckily Forbes recently ran a little profile on him.  Sigh.

Speaking of whom, he recently said on his blog, "But the more you laugh, the less you’ll grumble, and the better you’ll feel. The better you’ll BE. I mean better in the sense that your doctors will notice. It works. I know. It works."

...which makes me think of Joe Bu, who started chemo yesterday, and yet is STILL calling ACC.  Whenever he comes into work recently and I ask him how's he's doing, he says (with a smile), "I feel great, I feel fine, I feel this way all the time!", which, although silly, makes me laugh.  I like laughing.

    winter's here!

Today I woke up to a winter wonderland.  I got to wear my snow boots to work, and tramp through big piles of snow from the snow plows, and it all really made me quite happy.  It made me feel like I was 8 again, and I wished it would just keep blizzarding, and the plows would just be baffled by the amount of snow, and the most important decisions of the day would involve which hill we should go sledding on.

Apparently it's still blizzard conditions outside, but it looks to have slowed down a great deal since I walked to work.  And the internet's working now, which I enjoy.  Anyway, school is NOT cancelled, and I have to go to rehearsal now.

    But...snow makes me happy.

I love Lost.  I miss it.  But it drives me crazy!

    Friday, November 17, 2006

    hehe

One day a fourth-grade teacher asked the children what
their fathers did for  a living. All the typical answers came up --
fireman, mechanic , businessman,  salesman, doctor, lawyer,
    and so forth.

But little Justin was being  uncharacteristically quiet,
so when the  teacher prodded him about his father,
he replied, "My father's an exotic  dancer in a gay cabaret
and takes off all his  clothes in front of other men  and they
put money in his underwear. Sometimes, if  the offer is
really good, he will go home with some guy and make love
    with him  for money."

The teacher, obviously shaken by this statement,
hurriedly set the  other children to work on some exercises
and then took little Justin  aside to ask him, "Is that really true
    about your father?"

"No," the  boy said, "He works for the Republican
National Committee  and helped re-elect George Bush, but I
was too embarrassed to say that iin front of the other kids."

    Ever wonder..

...why Lord of the Rings fans have it so much easier than Star Wars fans?  Here's why.

    Tuesday, November 7, 2006

bye bye, Rick Santorum... I won't miss you!

In not-so-good news, Wisconsin passed the ban on gay marriage.  I guess maybe I SHOULD have switched my registration and voted here :(  Assholes.

    i like quizzes

    Your Sexy Halloween Costume Is
    Beer Garden Girl
    You Are Mostly Secure
In general, you feel confident and together.
But the wrong thing can happen, and all of a sudden, you're not feeling so secure.
Luckily, your insecurities don't last long... at least, not usually.
So the next time you're feeling insecure, try to snap out of it - and remember the confident woman you are!
    You Are a Fun Girl!
You are all about having fun - and you don't need to drink to have a good time
Sure, you've thrown back more than a few every so often
But getting totally stupid and wasted is not your style
You're the life of the party, by keeping everyone laughing and smiling
You Don't Have a Boyfriend Because You are Too Busy
While a relationship sounds nice, you're strapped for time
Whether you're legitimately busy or just making excuses...
... You don't give men enough of your time.
As nice as "instant love" would be, there's just no such thing.

    voting is yay

I sent my absentee ballot in for the upcoming elections; you should too.  If you're far away.  If not, go vote in person!  Let's say bye bye to Santorum, shall we?

Along those lines... I love Stephen Colbert.

On an unrelated note, I also enjoy Jimmy Kimmel.

Finally, Mark Sahba has a kinda pod-casty thing goin' on about Milwaukee Rep.  It's some interesting listening.

You are Claire. You are a very kind and caring person. You're not the bravest on the island, but you will stand up for yourself when the need arises. Compared to the other survivors, you have a pretty clean past and you're open and honest about most things. It's a good thing, too - Turniphead needs you to be nurturing and caring in order for him to grow up and NOT become the antichrist. Luckily, Charlie seems more than happy to assist you.

Your polar opposite is: Sawyer. You are similar to: Charlie and Sun.

    Half Life review

...can be found here"Long, gauzy curtains of white billow around Goeffrey M. Curley’s vaguely surreal set. The curtains swish around during very fluid changes of scenery, occasionally revealing very real people in very real bits of furniture. Conversations are started, abandoned and routinely left hanging in the ceaselessly dreamlike flow of events."

You know you're from Philly when...

*Before we begin this nice list, I'd like to point out that in the game last night, I was rooting for the Packers.  I mean, come on, how could any Guys on Ice fan NOT be rooting for Brett Favre?*

...bold it if its true of you...

You've never referred to Philadelphia as anything but "Philly." And New Jersey has always been "Jersey."

You refer to Pennsylvania as "PA."

You know how to pronounce Bryn Mawr, Schuylkill, Bala Cynwyd, Duquesne, Punxsutawney, Susquehanna, and Allegheny.

You know what a "Mummer" is.

You can use the phrase "fire hall wedding reception" and not even bat an eye.

    You absolutely hate T.O.

    You really miss Y-100.

At least 5 people on your block have electric "candles" in all or most of their windows all year long.

Words like "hoagie", "sticky buns", "shoo-fly pie", "pierogies" and "pocketbook" actually mean something to you.

You know the time and location of every "wing night" in a 20 mile radius.

You consider an exotic vacation to be a trip to Ocean City, Virginia Beach, or Myrtle Beach.

You think very little of an Amish buggy on the road.

You’ve run up the steps to the art museum emulating Rocky at least once.

You know that Intercourse, Climax, Virginville, Paradise, Mars, and Slippery Rock, Blue Ball, and Bird in Hand are all PA towns.

    You love Birch Beer.

You consider Pittsburgh to be "out west," and you know the fastest way to Philly is the Turnpike.

When the forecast said snow, you stayed up waiting for them to announce that school was cancelled.

You know that more than two inches of snow will at least get you a two hour delay.

You have an uncontrollable urge to buy bread and milk when you hear the word "snow."

You live within two miles of a plant that makes potato chips, corn chips, pretzels, candy, or ice cream, or that packages turkeys, beans, or bologna.

You think the roads in any other state are smooth.

Refer to something as "a whole nother," e.g., "That's a whole nother issue."

You punctuate every sentence with, "You know" at least twice.

You want olive oil, not mayonnaise on your hoagie.

Your favorite desert is water ice. (pronounced "wooder" ice)  (okay, I don't really say wooder..)

You find yourself using "yo" and "youse guys" when talking long-distance to family members.  (I say it when talking to anyone, really.)

You find yourself at a nice restaurant thinking "I wonder if they have cheese steaks?"

You visit New York and are impressed by how clean it is.

You've had more than one debate on why Wawa is better than Sheetz.

You call sprinkles on top of your ice cream cone "jimmies".

You can't imagine lunch without a Tastykake.

A vacation at the Jersey shore is better than going to an island (there's more stuff to do, plus you know everybody.)

You know where to find the Rocky statue.

You've had more than one heated discussion on why Pat's, Geno's, Jim's, or any of the other cheesesteak places is the best and all of the others suck.

You've never been to the Liberty Bell, or the only time you were there was on a class trip in third grade.

You know what and where "Boathouse Row" is

You will buy a pretzel from anyone, anywhere without even thinking of where it was - or where his hands have been.

You can't imagine a breakfast without scrapple.

    ...swimming through curtains...

Okay, updates are long overdue, so I thought I'd take a minute or three to do that whole updatin' thang.  First of all, Milwaukee is great.  I love the new intern company, love finally having Amanda back in town, love where I live in relation to work, and just love being back here in general.  Except it's already getting cold out.  Boo on that.

My show, Half Life, opened on Sunday night.  I served as Whitney's ASM on the show, and let me just say, what a fabulous experience.  I could not be happier with the first show of my season.  It's been a while since I've felt so proud of a show I've worked on and felt so completely that I was a vital part of the team that put it together.  It was my first time working with Whit on a show, and I really felt like she trusted me to do my thing throughout the rehearsal process and felt more relaxed as the SM knowing she could count on me and not have to babysit me.  I had a similar great experience working on Tuesdays with Morrie at the end of last season, but this show just required a lot more of me.  The show is only an hour 20 minutes long, but in that time there are THIRTEEN different scene changes, which I was a huge part of putting together.  The backstage life on the show is CRAZY, because we literally have no space into which we have to cram a shitload of furniture, as well as 10 actors, and Zinky, and me.  It's a very choreographed jigsaw puzzle back there, and I was the person in charge of deciding which part would fit where when.  And making sure it happens exactly the same way every night, and that everyone remembers/knows what they need to do, and keep everything safe, AND know what I have to do MYSELF.

So, when the show opening went very well, I was proud of it in a way that I haven't experienced for a while.  This was also my first time working with Laura Gordon, who directed it.  She's one of the Resident acting company members here at the Rep, but last season I just didn't work on any of the shows she was in, so we didn't know eachother until rehearsals started.  I loved working with her, and she was so appreciative of everything I did, and I can't wait to work with her again, on ACC (which she's in).  You know your director thinks you're good at what you do when they write a card to you on opening night that starts off, "You are a remarkable woman...".  Sigh, it makes me smile.

This week I'm catching up on some stuff with Guys on Ice, and doing the understudy run for Half Life.  It'll be good.

My horoscopes have been SO right on recently.  Everytime I read mine at work, I comment on it, so now Whitney is always like, "You ALWAYS say that about your horoscope, Becca."  It's true, shrug.  I could write about other stuff going on right now, but methinks I'll save that for another day.

    :)

    you oughta know

I just started to type out a really long entry....  then it got deleted.

    Here's the gist:

-I'm alive!  Milwaukee = good.  My social life is picking up again now that shows are opening and uh...yeah, that about sums that up.

-My apartment is small, but nice.  I miss the internet a bit, but I'm doing just dandy without A.C. or Cable right now.

Yeah, I really don't feel like typing more again.  I will say though, that I had an awesome Labor Day weekend, and my nose is burnt.  And I drank way too much.

And I'm obsessed with Veronica Mars

I haven't taken any pictures since I've been here.  Wierd, right?

    The End.

Does anyone know how to import entries like this into MySpace blogs?  Is there an easy way to just automatically send it there?

    Penny pictures

I wanted to put more pictures of Penny online before I leave home, but Flickr says I've reached my limit this month, so boo on Flickr.  They no longer get an A+ in my book.

Next time I see Penny she'll be gi-huge-ic.  So here's her current size.  Sigh.  What a cute puppy..

    number 1

What was the number 1 song the day you were born?
Mine: Maneater - Daryl Hall & John Oates
does this have some significance?  ;)

Countdown = 10 full days left at home.  Life is busy before then.

    The end!

    Wednesday, July 12, 2006

    the countdown is on

So, home now has a cable internet connection with a lovely wireless router, thanks to yours truly.  We went to Best Buy, and the guy there, who was very helpful, was also fairly pushy about wanting us to come have their Geek Squad or whatever they're called install all the stuff.  Which was going to cost an extra $150 or something.  So, I decided I should just do, and then if I had big problems, I could have them come THEN.
But I didn't have problems.  Voila.

I go back to Milwaukee two weeks from..today, actually.  In this time I must see many people, several shows, some doctor-type people of different varieties, finish up my job at Lenox (they love me), have a garage sale, PACK, and stop spending so much time on this shiny new mySpace account I finally gave in to getting.  And help Mom cancel AOL.  And spend as much time with Penny as possible.  I really need to add some music to my ipod, too.  I wonder what I did with the USB hook-up thingie...

I don't have much to say.  My horoscopes are not nearly as relevant this week as they were last week.  Shrug.

Hey, wouldn't it be nice if my contract for Milwaukee Rep showed up before I move there?

    Thursday, July 6, 2006

    and TODAY...

My horoscope today is just as relevant as yesterday's was.  I enjoy it when horoscopes are relevant.  Anyway, today:

Dragging matters out won't help you any. Do everything within your power that's required so you can move on. That means facing some painful parts of your past and owning up to your personal responsibility.

    .......

Mom is getting rid of AOL soon when we switch to Comcast...hence my e-mail will officially switch to rebeccarlindsey@gmail.com.  I wonder if I'll be able to keep this journal?  I'm somewhat attached to it.

    .......

    For serious.

    from Beth

This is pretty much exactly what Michelle Fleishman and I used to do with Eve 6 songs lyrics in 10th grade.  I kinda miss those days...  It's STILL funny.

    1. Randomly pick a song from your music library.
    2. Find the lyrics for the first four verses/chorus.
    3. Go to Google Translation and translate the lyrics from English into German.
    4. Take the new German lyrics and translate them into French.
    5. Take the new French lyrics and translate them into English.
    6. Post the NEW English lyrics and have people guess the original song.

    Sad..

Don't worry Keanu, I'll marry you.

Here's my quick home update: I'm temping at Lenox right now, making and editing lots of Excel spreadsheets for them.  Money is good.  Puppy, still nameless, comes home on Friday night.  Beth comes home Thursday night for over a week, hooray.  I miss Milwaukee LOTS...the people, my busy life there, the people, karaoke, the people, the cabaret, the beer, the people.  But I needed to be away from there for a bit too, so it's okay.  It's not nearly hot enough outside and I don't have nearly enough time to do things like go to the beach.  Just taking one day at a time...

The Brown bash at Noelle's was this past weekend and I had a great time and I'm so glad I got to see everyone.  Hopefully next year we can do it again :)  Pictures from Noelle and Amy are here.  Maybe some day I'll put mine online, but this dial-up business drives me crazy.

    It's past my bedtime.

speaking of The Da Vinci Code

"we live in a beautiful world, yeah we do, yeah we do"

I came across some articles regarding the movie, and how the Catholic Church wants us to boycott it.  Things like this really make me cringe.  And laugh.  And cringe.

-Exhibit A.  “We must not sleep as the Apostles did while Our Lord suffered in the Garden.” Yes, I'm seeing the comparison.  Good one!

    -Exhibit B.

    -Exhibit C.

-Exhibit D.  "Cardinal Arinze said The Da Vinci Code was loaded with mistakes that orient people against the church and that "any film produced on the basis of the book is already in error from the word go." "Christians must not just sit back and say it is enough for us to forgive and forget. ... Sometimes it is our duty to do something practical," the cardinal said." And then we learned how to define fiction!  And forgot how to be Christian.  All in one go.

Okay, I'm bored with this now.  I was procrastinating getting in the shower because Careers USA said they were going to call me as soon as Cindy got back from her lunch break, but I've been waiting an hour now and I need to be clean.

I forgot to vote today.  And I wouldn't know what I was voting for anyway, without spending time researching.  Bah, I suck at life.

    stuff

As I mentioned, I read Angels & Demons when I got home.  Like The Da Vinci Code (yes, I'm looking forward to the movie), I really enjoyed reading the book, but at the same time didn't have tooooo high an opinion of it.  The ideas all seem stolen (play Gabriel Knight 3 instead of reading The Da Vinci Code...seriously...), and the writing is NOT outstanding.  So, anyway, I found this blog entry on Dan Brown's writing kinda fitting.

Episodes of Firefly are now available on ITunes.  You should watch it, then go watch Serenity.  Seriously.  Let's raise them some money so they can resurrect these characters again in a new TV show.  Please?

Technology is wierding me out lately.  I love my Nano, but I can download Podcasts and all sorts of stuff to it and I find that wierd.  I embrace it, but it's spooky.  And on the turnpike now in some states, they have new EZPass/I-Pass stations where you don't have to slow down AT ALL.  You have your own special lane to drive in and there's just this thing hanging 20 feet in the air over the lane that collects your information as you continue driving.  No tollbooth, no slowing down, no green light telling you they got your information.

Yes, this is what I spend my time thinking about.

Tonight I'm going to watch Shop Girl.  I had a free Blockbuster rental.  Yay free movie.  Yesterday when I walked into the video store I was actually stressed out by the number of movies I want/need to watch this summer.  Stressed out in a good way, but still!

"Well, I'm back." - Samwise Gamgee, Return of the King

Home again, home again, la la la.

In true "the grass is always greener" form, I miss Milwaukee.  Home will be great and by the end of the summer I'll be sad to leave again, but right now I'm going through a bit of withdrawal.  For instance, last night after Lost was over, I just thought, "in about an hour I SHOULD be going to kareoke.."

I know I'll be going back, and SOON, and that I will see many/most of the same people again in life, if not soon.  There was something about saying goodbye to this intern group that was as upsetting as graduating, though.  When you go to college, you know that you'll be there for four years and then you'll have to say goodbye.  But most people try to find a job after graduating that they can stick with for a while, climb the ladder, etc.  In my life, though, I'm going to be saying goodbye to people every season, if not every few months.  Realizing that next year when I come back I won't have my intern group there, and that that same group of people will never be working at the same place at the same time again was saddening in a way that even graduating was not.  So, while I can't wait to go back next season with Briana and Whitney and Amanda and Becky, etc., and make new friends among the interns, I will miss Lauren and Jordan and Jeanine and Rachel and Mike and Matt and George and Venessa and etc.

Now, good news.  I just got the phonecall that I officially have an apartment to move into on July 30th or whenever I go back.  Yay!  It's in a building called Lakeside Apartments, which is owned by the same people as the Plaza.  It's a cheap efficiency apartment (aka teeeeeeeeeny tiny), but it's fine for just me.  I'll need to find some furniture to put in aforementioned apartment, though.  Also some money to buy the furniture with.  As much as I told people like Jordan and Matt that they're welcome to crash at my place until they find somewhere to live in the Fall (they'll both be back in Milwaukee working on shows for a few months), I'm seriously wondering whether I'll have any space for them to crash in...  Ah well, we can worry about that later.

Home is nice.  I read Angels & Demons - an enjoyable read.  I'm gonna call Careers USA tomorrow and get a temp job, and mom is gonna find us a puppy soon.  Tonight I'm going out with Jason - first time I've seen him since last September.  Wierd.

I lost 7 pounds since last I was home.  I would think an intern's income could do even better than that!  I'll blame it on the food stamps.

    best day ever!

Reasons today is the best day ever (but in no particular order..):

-Went out for lunch and coffee with Kelly and her baby, Annie down by the lake

-Going on my first motorcycle ride with Sahba later today

-It's over 70 degrees for once

    -New LOST tonight!

-I'm 80% sure I found an aprtment for next year (I'll know for sure after the open house on Sunday)

-Kareoke tonight...always a good time, but tonight EVERYONE is coming, since it's both me and George's last one

-I'm about to go be productive for an hour before Sahba shows up

-Next week at this time I'll be HOME!

    Yay, life.

    Boring review.  Yay, fun.

    Tuesday, April 18, 2006

    oh, yeah

I kinda forgot to mention this in the previous entries, but in case you haven't figured it out yet, I'll be back in Milwaukee for the Rep's '06-'07 Season.  It begins July 31st and my time here will be done mid-April of 2007.  I'm really excited about the tentative line-up, and now I must start apartment-hunting.  I'll make some actual money next year, with a 40-hour work week with TONS of overtime, and it looks like my title will be Stage Management Apprentice (not Assosciate like Amanda was this year...shrug..).  Basically, it's their way of keeping me around another season without me having to pay any Equity dues just yet ;)

"See you next Tuesday." - Mitch Albom

Mondays are so weird.  I mean, I'm better at relaxing than anyone on earth I think, but then when the day is over I feel like it disappeared so quickly.  Shouldn't I feel relaxed and well-rested?

I don't have much to say today... I'm gearing up mentally to leave, while meanwhile tons of people have already left Milwaukee.  Jeanine left today, and Amanda is the next to go.  BOO on that!  I'm so ready for summer, and so, it seems, is everyone else.  I think all we interns are done being interns mentally.  It's been a great ride, but a long one, and summer can't come quickly enough at this point.  Our last opening night party was on Friday (Sherlock Holmes opened that night), and this week marks our last two Understudy runs (Morrie's is tomorrow).  It's one of those weird months where everyone is very aware that it's their last few weeks here in this internship and things seem to be very condensed and happening much more quickly than they did before.  Last August, meeting these people for the first time, working on Flea, seems like a LONG time ago.

In the tradition of this entry from August 2004, I think I'll do a Intern Year Memories entry come May.  So look forward to that. ;)  In the meantime, many memories can be found on my picture site.

This week I've watched In Her Shoes (I liked), The Squid and the Whale (I liked), and Rent (I kinda liked).  I think I'm about to watch Syriana right now, too.

Almost done with A Feast for Crows!  Finally.  Next up: Shadow & Claw, by Gene Wolfe.

    Happy Belated Easter.

Review of Tuesdays can be found here.  I'll choose not to blame it on the author of the review that the title of the article not only has the play's name wrong (Tuesday with Morrie...only one?) but has misspelled Repertory Theater.  C U Next Tuesday!

    random

I'm about to go through a reading spurt again.  I can tell.  I have soooo much free time backstage during Morrie; all I'll ever do is read and knit.  So, I've got a pile of books ready to go, the one on top being, of course, A Feast for Crows, which I STILL haven't finished.

This week (tech and first two previews) I read Lipstick Jungle, which Charlotte randomly gave me (along with the tequila, mozarella sticks, margherita mix, and single red envelope).  I thought, "ooh, fluff, that will get me through tech nicely", and it did, and it was indeed fluff, but it kinda pissed me off at the same time that I enjoyed reading it.  I mean, how does an author like her (of Sex and the City fame), become so highly regarded?  The characters were NOT very likeable, not believable, there was no plot, and in terms of a fluff book, the "romance" scenes weren't too interesting.  So why does she sell so many books?

Then I randomly got to thinking about GOOD books tonight, and thought of Robin Hobb, and how when I finished reading her final book in the Tawny Man trilogy I felt such a sense of loss that it was over.  I think I cried, not just because the end was touching and whatnot, but because I wasn't going to get to read any more about those characters or that world.  And she's such a good writer.  So I was depressed.  I need some more books like that to read.

Don Mackay has been lending out all his SAG "For Your Consideration" movies to us interns.  He's like a lending library.  I'm saving the really good stuff for later and am just trying to keep a steady stream going of movies that are worth watching just b/c they're free!  So far I've watched Proof (the play is better), Sexy Beast (disturbing), The Prize Winner of Definace, Ohio (random), and The Affair of the Necklace (not so great).  The ones I'm really looking forward to getting to are, of course, Munich, Syriana, and Squid and the Whale.  And Rent, I guess.

Speaking of Don Mackay, it's a small world, because Jordan and I realized that he went to UCSD, which is where Devon and Jim went, so we asked him, and he knows Jim Peck AND Devon Allen AND Beth Schachter.  Welcome to the social circle of theatre, where anyone slightly successful must know all the other slightly successful people out there.

Anyway, got to take my sick body to bed.  Tomorrow's opening, and I'm looking forward to yet another opening night party.

    nope, not an update

George Bush, Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld are flying on
    Air Force One.
The President looks at the Vice President, chuckles, and says, "you
Know, I could throw a $1,000 bill out the window right now and make
    somebody very happy."
The Vice President shrugs and says, "Well, I could throw 10 $100 bills
out the window and make 10 people very happy."
Not to be outdone, the Secretary of Defense says, "Of course , then, I
could throw 100 $10 bills out the window and make a hundred people
    very happy."

    another short day

Home from work early again, surprise surprise.  I need to clean really badly, since housing inspections are on Thursday, and I don't want them to think I live in filth.  Which I don't, for the most part ;)
Sunday night was, as I expected, great fun, and rather unexpected as well.  My horoscope that day was completely right, but of course not in the way I thought it would be.  That always happens.  Damn ambiguous horoscopes.
My plan for the rest of the day is to clean and nap (I'm way tired.)  And call Mom, cuz I didn't talk to her yesterday.  Aside from that, I think I'll nap some more.
    Exciting.

    Sunday, March 26, 2006

Thus far, today is great, and I feel like it's going to continue to be great.  Just a feeling I have :)
Both today and yesterday I got out of work really early.  It's not that we're slacking off in rehearsal, but we're just doing so well.  Every day we come in, talk quickly about things to think about in our run-thru, do a run-thru of the show, have notes, and work notes afterwards.  To do another run would just be exhausting and pointless; no need to kick a dead horse.  So, then we go home.  It's in good shape, and we don't go into tech until NEXT Tuesday.  We've got time to spare.  In fact, this upcoming Tuesday we're not even going to have rehearsal.  Don will be in LA shooting a few episodes of Passions (yes, seriously), so we're just gonna take two days off!  Hooray.  Although I'll go into work on Tuesday anyway...  There's a production meeting, as well as a post-production review for Sueno and Bad Dates.  And I'll get some paperwork done - update my preset checklist, create a shift plot and perishables list, and begin the tech checklist.  Just 'cause I can.
Last night Lauren and I rented Crash.  I was NOT IMPRESSED.  Good acting, great ensemble in general, good camera-work, but... come on.  You're telling me this won over Brokeback?  I shake my head at you, Academy.  This movie is...well, it's like a bunch of people decided they wanted to make an "Important" movie.  They read the script and went, "Wow, this film is Important." With a capitol I.  But that's the problem with it.  They got so caught up in Theme or Idea  that they forgot to write an actual script that makes any sense.  Yes, prejudice is a problem.  It's a problem that so many people are prejudiced.  That's what this movie said, but it's ALL that it said.  It didn't offer any interesting insights into it, and didn't leave us wanting to discuss anything ABOUT the problem.  And the redemption scenes, if that's what they're meant to be, or perhaps they were meant to be Recognition scenes - ACCOMPLISHED NOTHING.  Great, so asshole cop saved the life of a woman.  That does not erase the fact that on the previous night he inappropriately GROPED her in a gross abuse of power.  And did he realize that groping her had been wrong?  I certainly didn't get that.  Bottom line is, the entire movie made me feel like the were hitting me over the head with a frying pan, with no point.
So, let's see.  Brokeback Mountain - great script, great acting, great cinematography, great music.  HEARTWRENCHING story.  Subtle.
Crash - unrelaistic script (do people really talk like this?  Um, no.), great acting, nice cinematography, okay music.  STUPID story.  Frying pan.
What else is new?  Wednesday night was great fun, Thursday night I saw Failure to Launch (I would have liked this movie in 8th grade), Friday I saw Jimmy Kaplan, and yesterday was Crash.  I also watched part of My Best Friend's Wedding on TV last night; it's dated.  It's weird to see something that I remember going to see in theatres and looking at her cell phone and e-mail and thinking how dated they are.
Tonight - out for Whitney's birthday to Wolski's...I've never been and I hear it will be fun.  Tomorrow - major cleaning and seeing the interns do a staged reading of Pygmalion at Ten Chimney's.
Life is good at this moment.  :)
Also, this will make sense to no one but me, but I'll say it anyway: the carousel is going 'round again.

Sad news from my favorite author (since 5th grade, I might add...)

    highs and lows

I've definitely been having a highs and lows kinda week.  I seem to always be having a really good fun time, or a really yucky not happy time.  Not really any in betweens.  I'm trying to stay as ositive as possible and just enjoy the time I have left here this season, but it's hard having evenings off when others are at work, and I sit at home twiddling my thumbs much more than I should.

So, exciting as it is to finally have 6-hour days...I'm not so much excited about them.  Evenings aren't much fun for me, and I wish I was working 6 hours in the evening rather than in the afternoon.

I can tell people are starting to have the "I'll be leaving soon" mentality.  From this point on it's one big stream of goodbyes..  Charlotte leaves tomorrow, Intimate Apparel closes this Sunday, then after next week Becky and Kyle and Jenna will leave, and Mike, and George, and Amanda, and Jeanine, and Moth the kitty, then Chris and Stacy... I don't particularly like this part of the season.  I hope the people I've developed close friendships with will remain close friends, and if not close, at least keep me updated on their lives as things progress.

Work continues to be great, though.  I really enjoy working on this show and feel proud of myself for the good work I'm doing on a daily basis.  I can tell I've grown a lot this season.

At the same time, I'm getting excited about warm summer weather, being home with Mom and the puppy, and especially seeing people on the East Coast again.

Tonight: a kareoke party for Charlotte's farewell and a new episode of LOST.  What more could a girl ask for?

Things that make you go hmm..

My horoscope today: A past friendship or relationship that fizzled actually could reincarnate as a business relationship. You might just find that whatever it was that didn't have you two working on a personal level makes you great work partners.

Okay, the fizzling happened, now where's my business opportunity?  hehe

    we're Tuesday people

This (the Subject) is so true of Theatre people.

Tuesdays with Morrie rehearsals are going really great.  We've been doing short days but getting TONS accomplished.  We began staging yesterday...and FINISHED staging today.  Umm, I have never seen a play be staged SO quickly!  The actors are great.  Bobby has done the show before, so he's completely off book, and Don wants to keep up with him, so he's already 90% off-book too.  Paul, the Director, really prepares for rehearsals in a big way, and Sahba and I are *so* on top of things.

In summary, this week has just made me feel really great about myself and what I'm doing.  (Not so great about myself in other arenas, but..it's okay.)

"You're, like...the MacGuyver of ASMs." - Don Mackay, to me in rehearsal today ;)

    another article, life update

    Regarding Intimate Apparel: http://www.mkeonline.com/story.asp?id=1391323

Life update:  Lydia's visit was great.  I'm so glad she was able to come when I had four days off in my life.  We went to the opening of A Month in the Country (no, I didn't work on that show), wandered around town and ate quite a bit, went to the art museum, saw a movie at the Oriental Theater, watched the Oscars, etc.  Oh, and I took her to see Intimate Apparel as well.  I've determined from her visit that I'm GREAT to visit, because of all the free stuff I provide:  a place to sleep, towels, groceries (thank you Wisconsin), two plays, $22 off our dinner at Mader's, beer at the opening night party, 1/2 off our art museum tickets, a cab ride, wine, internet service, cable...all of these things were free.

Today I got an e-mail from Troy Dwyer saying he wants to work with me this summer.  This made me both VERY happy (to hear from him, who I haven't spoken to since sometime before graduation, and that he thought of me as the person to SM his play despite the fact that I havenm't spoken to him since last May) and also rather sad (I couldn't say yes to working with him because I don't know that I'll be back from Milwaukee yet when rehearsals for his show begin).

Tuesdays with Morrie prep is going great.  I'm excited to be working on this show.  Everyone just gushes about the director, Paul Barnes, non-stop.  It's just a two-person show, in the Stiemke, I'll be acting as ASM both throughout rehearsals and through the run, and Mark Sahba, the SM, will definitely let me do my thing without looking over my shoulder or doubting my skill.  Plus, he's fun.  And we MIGHT be doing 6-hour days, which I have NEVER done and I think it's about time!  For those of you not in the know, six straight hours of rehearsal (with ten-minute breaks and one twenty-minute break) tallies up under Equity rules as the same amount of hours as an 8-hour rehearsal day (with ten-minute breaks plus a two-hour dinner break).  So, when doing 8 hour rehearsal days (the standard in my life), it goes something like this...

    10 - 11:30 am Meetings, rehearsal set-up

    11:30 - 4:30 pm Rehearsal

4:30 - 5:00ish pm Dinner break (aka paper-work on the computer)

5:00ish - 5:30ish Dinner break (eat some food)

5:30 - 6:30 pm Dinner break (more paperwork, set-up for rehearsal)

    6:30 - 9:30 pm Rehearsal

9:30 - 11:30ish Paperwork, etc.  So, 8 hours of rehearsal = 13 or so hours of work.

    Now, let's look at a 6-hour day!

    10:00 - 11:30 am Meetings, set-up for rehearsal

    11:30 am - 5:30 pm Rehearsal

5:30 - 8:00ish Paperwork, etc.  So, 6 hours of rehearsal = 10 hours of work.

That's three less hours of work!  Now, how amazing would this be in my life?  (Says the girl who has been a bit bored this week with her evenings off..haha)

Anyway, I'm done with that now.  In other news, I have recently turned into a female again and it's really quite annoying!  Grr.  The end.

    Q & A on Theater in Milwaukee

I came across this article regarding theatre in Milwaukee.  It has some nice things to say about theatre here in general, the Rep, productions I've worked on, and people I work with on a daily basis.

    Check it out.

    more brokeback

Lydia and I saw Brokeback Mountain again last night...  I wish Heath Ledger would win.  Anyway, here's another video spoof of, of course, two of my favorite hobbits: http://www.ifilm.com/ifilmdetail/2699711?htv=12

As I type this, it occurs to me they could do one with my OTHER two favorite hobbits as well..

    Brokeback parodies

So, Beth sent me this and I was amused...

    But then, I found THIS:

    Star Wars: The Empire Brokeback

    Tuesday, February 21, 2006

television without pity proves this week that... it's funny because it's true:
    >>On Craphole Island, Sayid is washing himself at some makeshift basin that seems to have been set up as far away as possible from any of the Lostaways' camps for some reason. Ana-Lucia comes running up, and demands to know where Jack is. She's pretty pushy with the guy whose soul mate she Cheneyed not all that long ago.<<
    >>Sawyer says that if Hurley helps him find it, he can "keep on ranch dippin'." Hurley considers this deal, because, once again, the rest of the Lostaways would certainly be on Sawyer's side right now.<<
    >>Sawyer and Hurley go tree-frog hunting. It's just such filler that even recapping it is a waste of time. Hurley gripes that this is how people get killed in scary films. No, this is how people get bored by pointless scenes that don't advance anything.<<
    >>
The timer resets to its customary 108 minutes, and Locke's really relieved. He'd seen last week's previews as well, and was under the impression we'd find out what happens when the timer runs out. But it looks like we're still on schedule to find out what happens sometime around Season 5.<<
    Oh, snap.

In other news, if you're looking for a job for next year, it has come time for me to recommend that you apply to the Rep's internship program.  It's never too late in life, and I'd definitely recommend it REALLY highly to those wnating to go into stage management, very highly to actors, and just plain highly to those wanting to go into directing.  For SMs, it's a really great bridge between school and the professional world.  You can go into the professional world without crossing this particular bridge, but this'll make you a whole lot better at your job when you do.  For actors, although the main load of work is understudying rolls, you still get the potential to go on, you learn alot because you're working with so many varied professional actors and directors.
    But seriously, DO NOTAPPLY if:
    a) you're lazy.  I am not exaggerating when I say that you would be working 14 hour days 6 days a week for the duration of 9 months.  And I mean WORKING.
    b) your ego is too large for your head.  That just won't work out too well for you.
    c) your life is Musicals.  They do ONE here per year, folks, and it's A Christmas Carol.  Well, and Guys on Ice, but that wouldn't apply to you anyway.
    d) you have a strong aversion to the following:  beer, cheese, the cold, brats, or food stamps
Okay, now here's a link, and a word to the wise: the part where it says that Carey Lawless is the production manager, and that you should send your stuff to her is a lie.  She is no longer the production manager.  If you're applying for the production internship, send your stuff to Judy Berdan.  SHE would be the production manager.  And say you know me.  And Jordan.  Unless you don't.  The end.

    Good night, and good luck.

I have no voice.  I'm not sure where it went, but I only miss it a little right now.  I'm still in the fun, "Hey, everyone listen to my scary manly voice" phase.  However, when we do run-throughs of Intimate Apparel and I'm on book, like today, it sounds a little scary when I prompt people.  Alas.  Last night when I recorded the nightline, it was beautiful to listen to.

Not much new here this week.  Bad Dates closes on Sunday, so then I'll stick with Intimate Apparel 'til they open, and then...move on to my final show...  Crazy.  Apparel has been a good rehearsal process for me; Richelle and Amanda are a great team to work with and I have fun with them, and I've gotten to be the costumes liason for this show, which I've never done.  It's been good for me...I'm so used to thinking only about props in a weird kind of way as ASM, and this director is pretty demanding in some ways, so staying on top of costume stuff has been interesting for me.

Poor kitty is starved for attention, poor body is starved for sleep, and poor Sawyer is starving for me to re-watch that Lost episode from Wednesday.  Final words of wisdom:

    roxyelle72 (12:15:14 PM): be a goddess

    Good times...

I saw Match Point tonight.  Human race, you suck.  Jonathan Rhys Meyers, you're hot.  Remember Velvet Goldmine?

    Have I mentioned I love Pandora.com?

Intimate Apparel starts rehearsals tomorrow.  Bad Dates continues to be a good time.  And Sueno, which I'm no longer on, opened last Friday.

    1. the Stackner Cabaret (and of course, all things involved with it - alcohol, goldfish, olives, etc.).  Now, seriously, going there ervery night of my week is getting sad.  I would vow not to go there this week, but that would probably be a lie.

    2. LOST.  Duh.  It has filled the void left in my heart by the passing of LOTR.

    3. US Magazine.  It might be the best thing ever to read backstage during Bad Dates.  More so than Entertainment Weekly, believe it or not.  Well, and He's Just Not that Into You, but that is just one book rather than having a new issue every week.
